Das künstlerische Schaffen Andy Warhols (1928-1987) wandelt sich Anfang der sechziger Jahre grundlegend. In seinen Serien zu Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor und Ethel Scull, die in der vorliegenden Studie erstmals genauer in den Blick genommen werden, entwickelt Warhol ein Porträtkonzept, das als entscheidende Erneuerung und Erweiterung des Gattungsbegriffs zu werten ist. §Warhols serielle Bildherstellung wurde bislang zumeist als bloße Imitation massenmedialer Bildreproduktion interpretiert. Annette Löseke deutet die Porträtserien hingegen als bildliche Variationen, in denen nicht Eigenschaften oder Ansichten eines Individuums als vermeintlich gegebener Gegenstand der Darstellung, sondern die Darstellung selbst modifiziert und reflektiert wird. §Die Untersuchung geht von der Frage aus, wie Kunstwerke, auch als Porträts, darstellen, was sie darstellen. Deshalb werden Warhols Auswahl der Fotografien, deren Bearbeitung für den Siebdruck und die Reproduktion als Siebdruck-Gemälde eingehend analysiert. Indem Warhol Reproduktion nicht nur technisch, sondern strukturell begreift, entwickelt er einen mehrwertigen Bildbegriff für die Interpretation zeitgenössischer serieller, nicht-repräsentierender Bilder.§§The creative work of Andy Warhol (1928-1987) underwent a fundamental change at the beginning of the 1960s. In his series depicting Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Ethel Scull, which are examined more closely for the first time in this study, Warhol developed a concept of portraiture which deserves to be seen as a decisive renewal and expansion of the genre.§Warhol s serial production of images has generally been interpreted as simply an imitation of mass-media picture reproduction. Annette Löseke, however, interprets the portrait series as pictorial variations in which, rather than the characteristics and features of an individual forming the assumed subject of the image, the image itself is modified and reflected.§The study takes as its starting point the question of how works of art, including portraits, depict what they depict. Therefore the author analyses in depth Warhol s choice of photographs for screen-printing and reproduction as screen-print paintings. Because Warhol understood reproduction not only technically but also structurally, he developed a multivalent pictorial concept for the interpretation of contemporary serial, non-representative images.
