The legendary conference held in 1933 on the topic of the 'functional city' by the Congrčs Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM, 1928-1959) was the fourth of the organization's 11 meetings. In reports specially prepared for the congress, 34 cities were recorded cartographically using a predefined scheme to allow comparative analysis. The Atlas of the Functional City brings together all of the sur­ viving materials on the conference for the first time, presenting them systematically and placing them in an international urban­planning context. The research project on which the book is based was a collaborative undertaking jointly organized by the Van Eesteren­-Fluck & Van Lohuizen Foundation and the gta Archives at the ETH in Zurich. Zu den wichtigsten der elf CIAM-­Kongresse (Congrčs Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne, 1928-1959) gehört der legendäre 4. Kongress von 1933, welcher der «Funktionalen Stadt» gewidmet war. 34 Städte wurden nach einem festgelegten Schema kartografisch erfasst und konnten so vergleichend analysiert werden. Im Atlas of the Functional City wird das gesamte überlieferte Material erstmals systematisch zusammengeführt, publiziert und im überregionalen städtebaulichen Kontext untersucht. Das Forschungsprojekt ist eine Kooperation zwischen der Van Eesteren­-Fluck & Van Lohuizen Stichting und dem gta Archiv der ETH Zürich.
