Volunteering by older people is in danger from predators seeking to control it. As more public services are transferred to charities their volunteers are adopting the values of state services and losing their greatest attribute - independence. They are being nationalised. Volunteering should be liberating. It needs facilitators, not managers. No one has the right to colonise the social capital of a community without offering empowerment in return.
