In 2011, many Syrians took to the streets of Damascus to demand the overthrow of the government of Bashar al-Assad. Today, much of Syria has become a warzone and some see the country on the brink of collapse. Burning Country gives an account of this trajectory - from peaceful protest to civil war - and focuses on the stories, usually absent from mainstream narratives, of ordinary people and their struggle to transform the face of modern Syria. Alongside the grassroots story, Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami examine the response of a range of actors on the international and regional levels to the crisis in Syria and argue that the international community has failed in its stated commitments to support the Syrian opposition movements. Using both first-hand accounts and a broad range of secondary source material, Burning Country provides an in-depth analysis of revolution and counter-revolution in Syria and comes out unequivocally in support of the removal of the Assad government.
