Don't accept the ordinary opinions about the Middle Ages unless you are sure you know a great deal about that period. John Fiske gives high praise to medieval times in the introduction to his work on The Beginnings Of New England, or the Puritan Theocracy in Its Relations to Civil and Religious Liberty.
