In 1998, Tokyo-based Breton-born London-trained designer Gwenael Nicolas founded the Curiosity project to create innovative and award-winning product, interior and building design. He explains his philosophy thus: 'Along the path of my career I have discovered that design is about creating 'the art of encounter'. In Japanese, the word 'deai' (pronounced as day-eye) expresses the moment when two people or things come together. The intention of my design is to generate that 'deai' moment, beyond culture and knowledge, taste and interest, where I can create the conditions in which a connection can be established between two or more entities. The concept of beauty has different interpretations throughout the world, with European cultures associating it with perfection. However, in contrast to this, in Japan it is imperfection that reveals true beauty. Therefore what becomes significant for design is creating the 'encounter'.' This book is a showcase and a celebration of his work, including creations for Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Berluti, Nissan, Lexus and Sony which demonstrate how the 'encounters' have triggered curiosity and designs that transcend complexity, economics or culture. Printed on 170gsm art paper, and presented in a slipcase.
