Waters tells in vignettes her long trek from Southern poor to her practice as a Nurse Midwife, writer, and publisher. Stories of how she overcome the loss of her mother at an early age, how she searched through many relationships looking for mother love. With 25 years practice as a nurse midwife she tells of her struggles pioneering midwifery in hospitals where they were non-supportive and others who embraced her profession. She tells the reader how she came to write the first book ever published about massage and pregnancy, what lead her to write and publish the never before heard voices of women telling how they delivered their babies in hospitals and were mistreated by these institutions.
