Opis

Derby is central to England, both geographically and in terms of its contribution to the England's history, including its industrial history and its involvement in mining, agriculture, textiles and the war. Awarded city stats in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth II, Derby had previously been one of a small number of towns to have a cathedral but not a city status. The city played a key role in the Civil War, successfully defending the county against Royalist armies, and around 100 years later, the city had a visit from Bonnie Prince Charlie, who set up camp while on his way to seize the British crown. Derby is thought of as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and with its central location, the city became played a key part in the British rail industry that really began to take hold in the nineteenth century. Contributing further to the industrial 'boom', Rolls-Royce has had lasting popularity in the city. The World Wars also impacting Derby, and slum clearance in the 1920s and 30s saw the city become less populated as families moved to the outlying suburb. Despite this move, the central city holds many fond memories for a number of people, and as an extremely popular city with both residents and visitors Derby is unique in many ways. Alfreton-based historian and author Jill Armitage delves into the history of this area with this informative read and provides a nostalgic journey into the past for all to embark on.
