In these 'straight talks', based on meetings he has had with a wide spectrum of audiences across Europe, Maros Sefcovic demonstrates his conviction that the European Union must continue to move towards a more political union, to break decisively with the darker forces of chauvinism and mutual hostility that cast a shadow over much of Europe's twentieth century history. While taking a realistic view of the contemporary economic and political landscape - and of the difficult circumstances created by the financial crisis - he remains positive and proactive in his proposals for the future of the EU. He is also unapologetic in arguing for the continuing pivotal importance of the often-criticised Commission to the European project. Maros Sefcovic's hope is to reinforce the resolve of those who believe that the EU, whatever its current imperfections, represents Europe's best hope in these turbulent times. He warns that too many of Europe's leaders are reluctant to stand up for the EU project and that 'we simply cannot afford to let Eurosceptic or, even worse, anti-European parties dictate the political narrative'. At the same time, these straight talks are also a basis for him to engage in a constructive debate with those who do not share his views.
