This book is part of a series on historical female figures. It features the American writer Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896). She was a committed abolitionist, and is perhaps best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin in which she depicted the harsh lives of African-American slaves, which touched audiences across the States and Britain. Stowe was a leading figure of the movement to end slavery and her legacy remains today.
