Excerpt from Inquiry Into the Rise and Growth of the Royal Prerogative in England This edition is printed from a corrected copy of the work lent to me several years ago by the author, who long before his lamented death in 1843 had contemplated a new edition of the 'Inquiry' with some alterations and additional matter. That his intention was not carried into effect is to be deeply regretted. The 'Inquiry into the Life and Character of King Eadwig' I selected from among a large number of the author's manuscripts, which were kindly placed in my hands by the late Lady Holland, with permission to transcribe from them whatever I might deem desirable either for my own use or for publication. This tact, though powerfully written and bearing the impress of the author's mind on almost every page yet seems to have been regarded by him as an unfinished publication.
