LBJ: the Can-Do President is intended for fifth through eighth graders, young people ready to progress beyond a child's understanding of history. It tells more than the mere facts of Lyndon Johnson's life. Not only does it examine how his personality and habits and choices created the man he became, it offers young people an introduction into the historical complexities of the '60's and the workings of government. Louann Temple's book delightfully relates the details of my father's life with humor and with the "bark off" for young readers as well as old. I learned some things about his early life too. Lynda Johnson Robb The book is a splendidly written "inside story" for young people. Louann Temple showed her "can-do" credentials by writing an accurate, engaging, and worthy account for this age of students that Daddy had once taught. Luci Baines Johnson A lifelong Texan, with degrees in English and American Civilization from the University of Texas at Austin, Louann Temple observed history firsthand when her husband served on President Lyndon Johnson's White House staff. She has been an active community volunteer, particularly in the arts and in education. Her interest in the arts led her to six years as a Texas Commissioner for the Arts and to write a master's thesis on presidential support for the arts. She has also written articles for The Handbook of Texas. Eager to remain close to her alma mater, she has served on Advisory Councils at the University of Texas for Liberal Arts and for UT Press.
