This is a superbly illustrated exploration of the work of Lorenzo Bartolini, one of the 19th century most significant sculptors. Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850) was an Italian sculptor whose work - which combined neoclassicism with naturalistic details - played a central role in the development of sculpture across Europe during the 1800s. Filled with stunning full-colour and black & white illustrations, this volume explores Bartolini's work and how he probed the popular themes of sentiment, memory, and ethic and civil values throughout his career. It also examines his neoclassical period and his work for Napoleon Bonaparte, his move towards the emerging values of Purism, and the large number of portrait sculptures he created for a range of important figures throughout Europe - including Byron, Liszt, and Rossini.
