The book examines sustainable development that will lead to financially robust systems and focuses on societal development, environmental conservation, technological infusion and employment creation. Against a background of growing doubts about the sustainability of the model of development of today's world, this book highlights contemporary management science perspectives in general, and issues of society welfare in particular. While acknowledging the unprecedented expansion of human ingenuity, this book also raises awareness and encourages dialogue on pertinent issues. Four broad areas of concern are identified: competency and talent management, "going green," sustainable human resource practices and environmental sustainability. The competency and talent management section discusses how a shift from an ad hoc management of talent to a strategic talent management policy can return dividends in terms of enriching the human resources of an organization. The section on "going green" addresses the issues of conscious choice made by consumers and investors when it comes to green products or companies. The chapters on sustainable human resource practices focus on stress, work-life balance, culture, leadership and attitude to work. The section on environmental sustainability examines the shift towards renewable energy and management of health hazards.§The chapters of this book are based on papers that were presented at the conference on Innovations and Best Practices in Business, Human and other Earth Resources Management organized by the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the Ex-President of India.§§
