Loretta Napoleoni's first book explored how terrorist organizations generate the funds they need from a mixture of legal and illegal activity and how the need for revenue influences their aims. Napoleoni now takes the techniques of economic analysis developed in Terror Inc. and applies them in greater detail to the Islamic insurgency. In it she explores how a movement towards independent economic development in the Middle East has cooperated with Islamist militants to create a growing challenge to Western domination in the region. In a narrative that stretches back to the creation of the modern Middle East in the years after the Second World War, Napoleoni shows how the modern jihad articulated by Al Qaeda is best understood as a rational project to reconstruct the Arab Middle East as an independent economic bloc with a sphere of influence stretching through much of East Africa and Central Asia. Napoleoni is uniquely placed to explore exactly how modern business and organized violence co-exist, how public enemies can be private partners, and how the public relations categories of the 'war on terror' and the 'Islamic jihad' conceal and distort a reality more fascinating and more frightening than we could ever have imagined.
