Elizabeth Holdgate enjoyed a secure childhood in the little country town of Clare, Suffolk in the 1930s, and this is her tribute to the community which gave her so much. Pashler's Lane is named for her grandfather Freddie Pashler. He and other local 'characters' are seen here through a child's eyes as, between Priory and Common, Castle and Church the life of a self-sufficient little community rolled on, untouched (or so it seemed) by great events, until war came.
