The right to a fair world through sustainable development and a sustainable economy is undisputed in political discourse today, but in the bitter reality it meets its limitations. Poverty still remains the greatest challenge facing environmental protection and the conservation of biodiversity. Sustainable development can only be achieved when regional conditions are recognized, as well as the needs and knowledge of the respective regions and their people. This book presents the proceedings of a workshop in the Philippines that discussed concrete projects for renewable raw materials in modern technology, subsistence and biodiversity improvement, as well as new project strategies. These initiatives clearly illustrate that in order to achieve sustainable development in the new social order an innovative dialogue between environment and economy is crucial.

Wir alle haben das Recht, durch nachhaltige Entwicklung zu einer nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweise zu gelangen - das gilt heute in der politischen Diskussion als selbstverständlich. Aber die Wirklichkeit macht deutlich, dass dieses Konzept seine Grenzen hat. Armut ist noch immer das größte Problem für den Umweltschutz und die Bewahrung der biologischen Vielfalt. Nachhaltige Entwicklung kann es nur geben, wenn die regionalen Bedingungen und die Bedürfnisse der Menschen berücksichtigt werden. Diese Dokumentation stellt die Ergebnisse eines Workshops auf den Philippinen vor. Diskutiert wurden konkrete Projekte zur Nutzung nachwachsender Rohstoffe in moderner Technik, Landwirtschaft und Naturschutz; auch neue Strategien für solche Projekte kamen zur Sprache. Diese Initiativen machen deutlich, dass nachhaltige Entwicklung nur durch einen Dialog zwischen Umweltschutz und Wirtschaft verwirklicht werden kann.
