This book examines the relationship between Islamand political culture in Pakistan in the fourdecades following its naissance. It assesses thevalidity of the argument that a polarity has emergedin the Pakistani political culture, consisting ofIslamism and Islamic modernism. In the case ofPakistan, Islamism refers to the use of the primarysources of Islam in crafting both policy andpolitical institutions. Islamic modernism refers tothe systematized use of these primary sources aswell as secondary and extra-Islamic sources, asadjusted for contemporary circumstances. Theseideologies are gleaned from the discourse ofPakistani ideologues, Sayyid Abu l A la Mawdudi andFazlur Rahman. It examines the thought of Mawdudiand Rahman as the discursive backdrop to thepolarity of political culture. It then providesanalysis of three regimes which exacerbate thispolarity. These regimes include the Islamicmodernist regime of Ayub Khan, from 1958 to1969, the quasi-Islamist regime of Zulfiqar AliBhutto, from 1971 to 1977, and the Islamistregime of General Zia ul-Haq, from 1977 to 1988.
