Opis

Exploring for diamonds probably doesn't occupy too many conversations around the dinner table, but that's mostly what geologist Tom Lindsay has been doing in various countries, on four continents, for over forty years. From scrabbling about at the bottom of one of the world's deepest mines, to seeing the sun rise over a sacred mountain in China, the book is populated with unusual locales, oddball characters and larger-than-life situations in a world largely shielded from today's well-travelled tourists. It's a world Lindsay obviously delights in, even in adversity, such as when he's almost arrested for kidnapping an armed policeman.

In this narrative, loosely based on factual events, Lindsay's career is related in chapters of recurring themes. The central character has thus far led a life more reminiscent of that of an explorer in the 1800's than that which might be expected of a modern scientist. His somewhat wry views on many issues are coloured by the numerous locations and cultures in which he's not only worked, but lived, often during periods of significant social change. .

Biography

Tom Lindsay is the pseudonym of a professional geologist who has worked for over forty years in mineral exploration and mining in Africa, China and Australia, with the occasional foray into Russia and South America. He's spent most of this time involved with diamonds, although never at the glamour and glitz end of the spectrum. He now lives in the UK and when he's not fixing computers or WiFi networks for those bewildered by technology, or walking dogs, or working in the garden, or brewing beer, he's happy to be exploring for those elusive gems in the more remote parts of the world.
