This new sixth edition of Bradt's Sri Lanka is the longest and most comprehensive guide available to this alluring island nation. Freshly researched and completely rewritten by Philip Briggs, one of the world's most successful and experienced guidebook writers, it offers detailed coverage of all major and many minor towns, beach resorts and archaeological and historic sites, some of which are not covered in any other international guidebook. It is also particularly strong on national parks. Thorough background information ranges from comprehensive coverage of natural history and birding to detailed sections on history and religion. Hotel and restaurant listings have been compiled from scratch, rather than updated from historical information; in many towns the author inspected a shortlist of 40-50 hotels and guesthouses in order to choose the 10-20 to include in his recommendations. This new edition also includes around 70 new maps and site plans, including maps of national parks and their surrounds, plus detailed town plans and plans of major or more sprawling archaeological sites. Since the end of the civil war in May 2009, tourism to Sri Lanka has increased significantly and affected areas of the north and east - including several attractive wildlife parks and beach areas previously closed - have opened up, while the whole country has enjoyed a high level of political stability and safety. This new edition of Bradt's Sri Lanka provides detailed coverage of many areas - such as Mannar Island, Jaffna and Wilpattu National Park etc - that have only become safely accessible in recent years. Sri Lanka is a compact and diverse island, with landscapes ranging from a magnificent tropical coastline to the mist-shrouded tea plantations and cloud forests of the scenic hill country around Kandy. Beach holidays are a major attraction all year round, while wildlife-viewing opportunities include some of the world's finest whale and dolphin-watching, as well as the opportunity to spot Asian elephants, leopards and enigmatic sloth-bears in well-protected national parks. The bird checklist totals around 430 species, a remarkable tally for such a small island, and includes around 30 endemics found nowhere else in the world.
