Opis

Excerpt from The Attwood Family: With Historic Notes and Pedigrees The interest evoked by the original appearance in the newspaper press of my brief descriptive notice of the Att wood Family, on the occasion of the erection of a memorial brass in Southwick Church, Co. Durham, to Mr. And Mrs. Edward Attwood, of Bishopwearmouth, has led to its issue in a more permanent form. To the courtesy of Mr. And Mrs. Moore, of Oakwood, Beckenham, Kent (mrs. Moore being the only daughter and representative of Mr. Edward Attwood), I have been indebted for much valuable informa tion, which is added as an appendix to the original descrip tive essay of the family history. In these valuable historic references the reader will find conclusive evidence that my original estimate of the inżuence and territorial importance of the family was underrated rather than overestimated. I have to apologise for the want of arrangement in the his toric notes. So voluminous were the documents placed at my disposal, that the difficulty was what to leave out rather than what to embody in the appendix, many of those in cluded having only reached me after the book had gone to press. But I make no apologies for bringing before the reader the records of so remarkable a family. From the far-off days of our pre-norman history down to the great Victorian Era of the last half-century, the family have ever been conspicuous for their patriotism and ceaseless indus try. In the Southern Counties, in the Midlands, and in the North of England, the high character of the Attwoods hasbecome as familiar as household words. On the field of battle, in the Councils of the nation, in the walks of Science, and in the marts of Commerce, the family for upwards of a thousand years have been foremost citizens in our national life and history. While as liberal dispensers of charity, and in the exercise of benevolence, their names will ever be held in grateful remembrance in the bead-roll of national benefactors of the Sick and the poor. Of the present repre sentatives of the family in its numerous branches, it needs only to be recorded that they are worthy descendants of.
