A young pre-teen gets into trouble and a school yard fight. Thinking his street fighting actions caused a murder, he ran away from everything. During the years on the horse race tracks, he became a street wise, tough kid who, with his white hair and big smile, would be taken for "the child next door". His travels would take him over the country, into jail, and finally to the friendship of a giant newspaper owner. An entirely new life would begin and his adventures left no stone unturned. On April 7th, 1935 a young pregnant mother was taken off a train in Youngstown, Ohio ready to give birth to a son; this is how Morton 'Sonny' Metker came into the world. Mort lived in many different states and attended many different grade schools. He learned to fight on the streets, in barns, and knew it all when his life took him into the race track world as a young kid. With determination and a degree from the school of hard knocks, Mort went on to achieve a good many things; he would serve in the US Army overseas in Germany, he would be appointed the youngest member of the Board of Directors to the Great Lakes Newspaper, he would became a thirty second degree member of the Masonic Lodge, obtain his pilot's license, and enjoy the raucous atmosphere being an auctioneer in the areas of livestock and real estate. Mort would muster the determination and perseverance to overcome an addiction to alcohol. Most of all Mort would prove the wrong side of the track worked out to be the right side for him.
