Excerpt from The Works of John Locke, Vol. 7 of 9 I did not, when I rcfieżed on it, very much wonder, that this part of facred feripture had difficulties in it: many caufes of obfcurrtyidid readily occur to me. The nature of epiftolary writings in general, difpofes the writer to pafs by the mentioning of many things, as, Well known to him; to whom his letter is addreffed, which are neceffary to be laid Open to a firanger, to make him comprehend what is faid: and it not feldom falls out, that a well-penned letter, which is very eafy and intelligible to the receiver, is very obfcure to, a firanger, who hardly knows what to make of it. The matters that St. Paul writ about, were certainly things well known to thofe he writ to, and which they had fome peculiar concern in; which made them eafily ap prehend his meaning, and fee the tendency and force of his difcourfe. But we having now, at this diżance, no information of the occafion of his writing, little or no knowledge of the temper and circumftances thofe he writ to were in, but what is to be gathered out of the epiżles themfelves; it is not firange, that many things in them lic concealed to us, which, no doubt, they who were concerned in the letter, underżdbd at firft fight. Add to this, that in many places it is manifeft he an fwers letters fent, and quefiions propofed to him, which, if we had, would much better clear thofe paffages that relate to them, than all the learned notes ofcritics and commentators, who in after-times fill us w ith their con jeciures for very often, as to the matter in hand, they are nothing elfe.
