The story is that of the first successful Plantation in Ireland; the life is the life of its settlers and their descendants; the scene, broadly, the territory in North Down granted by James the First to James Hamilton and Hugh Montgomery; the period, that beginning with the arrival of the adventurers in 1605-6, and ending with the dawn of the industrial era in the first decade of the 19th century, - a round two hundred years.
