This visually stunning political, social, and cultural study contains 450 photographs (many previously unpublished) which portray life in Hungary from every angle -- the May Day march, pop music, the homeless, sport, and others. Together with the introductory text, they provide a snapshot of socialism through the Kadar regime in Hungary (1956-1989) and capture the essence of the world behind the iron curtain. The volume includes indexes of names, terminology and institutions, and dailies and periodicals. Gero is a professor of history at Central European U. in Budapest, and Peto is a historian and a member of the Hungarian Parliament.
