This is an exploration of the unique wooden architectural tradition of the Dong minority peoples of the mountainous regions of SW China - one that has been highly influential on mainstream Chinese architectural tradition, and one most likely to disappear in decades to come, as it is overwhelmed by China's current rampant modernisation. The author discusses the historic development of Dong architectural techniques as affected by the social and physical environment as well as agriculture and forestry practices of the Dong people.
