Anhand sieben biographischer Skizzen zeigt der Autor, wie mühsam der Weg war, den die russische Literatur zurücklegen mußte, bis sie den vollen Zugang zur antiken Literatur hatte. Ende des 16. Jhs. kam es zu ersten nachhaltigen Begegnungen mit der lateinischen Sprache und Kultur, und zwar im Grenzgebiet von Rußland und Polen und damit zwischen Orthodoxie und Katholizismus. Die erste Kenntnis von Horaz gewann man in Rußland erst zu Beginn des 18. Jhs., erst im Jahre 1747 legte M. V. Lomonosov eine gültige Übersetzung von Carmen III, 30 vor. V. V. Kapnist [1758-1823] war vornehmer griechischer Abstammung, seine Familie stand dem Zarenhaus nahe. Nach kurzem Militärdienst widmete er sich seit 1775 eigener dichterischer Tätigkeit und seit 1791 der teils originalgetreuen, teils freieren Übersetzung von 45 der 120 Horazgedichte ins Russische. Meist verwendete er dafür gereimte Jamben und gab den Gedichten stets Überschriften. Auch über die Bedeutung guter Übersetzungen antiker Schriftsteller für die europäischen Literaturen und die Schwierigkeit des Übersetzens schrieb er. 1849 erschien die erste Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke und Übersetzungen. On the basis of seven biographical sketches the author explains the difficult road, that Russian literature had to take, until it had gained full access to antique literature. In the late 16th century the first lasting encounters with Latin language and culture occurred on the border between Russia and Poland, and thus between Orthodoxy and Catholicism. First knowledge of Horace was gained in Russia early in the 18th century. It was not before 1747 that M. V. Lomonosov published a reliable translation of carmen III, 30. V. V. Kapnist [1758-1823] was of noble Greek descent and his family was on close terms with the Tsar family. After a short military service, he dedicated himself to his own poetic work from 1775 onwards, and from 1791 he published translations of 45 of the 120 poems of Horace into the Russian language, some of them more faithful to the original, some more loosely related to the source. He mostly used iambic verse with rhymes and he always gave the poems a title. He also reflected on the importance of good translations of ancient writers for the European literatures and the difficulty of translation. In 1849 the first complete edition of his works and translations was published.
