Was bei jeder andern Kunst noch Beschreibung, ist bei der Tonkunst schon Metapher. Bereits Eduard Hanslick wies in seiner Schrift Vom Musikalisch-Schönen (1854) auf die besondere Rolle von Metaphern für das Verstehen von Musik hin. Vom Klang zur Metapher greift die metapherntheoretischen Diskussionen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts auf und macht sie für einen analytischen Zugang zu Musik fruchtbar. Die Untersuchung zeigt Wege auf, wie sich das Prinzip der Metapher zu einem grundlegenden Reflexionsmodell für musikalische Analyse ausbauen lässt. Dafür werden an Beispielen der Musik Beethovens und Schumanns verschiedene Zeichenkonstellationen auf ihre Metaphernartigkeit hin durchleuchtet: Der Transfer konkreter Musikpassagen in eine metaphernhaltige Beschreibung, die Relation von Thema und Variation in der Instrumentalmusik als Modell einer musikinternen, nichtsprachlichen Metaphorik und die Symbiose von Musik und Sprache im betitelten Klavierstück und im Kunstlied. Das Buch lotet die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen einer Integration der metaphorischen Dimension in das analytische Vorgehen aus und reflektiert sie methodisch. Es eröffnet musikanalytische Perspektiven auf die und mithilfe der Metapher.§ What in every other art is still description is in music already metaphor. Back in 1854 Eduard Hanslick indicated in his work On the Beautiful in Music the special role of metaphor in our understanding of music. 20th- and 21st-century discussions of the theory of metaphor have taken up this question of sound becoming metaphor and made it a productive analytical approach to music. This study shows how the principle of metaphor can be developed into a model for the consideration of musical analysis. Using examples from the music of Beethoven and Schumann, various constellations of notes are interpreted in terms of the metaphorical character: the transfer of concrete passages of music into a metaphorical description, the relationship of theme and variation as a model of non-linguistic metaphor inherent in music, and the symbiosis of music and language in a titled piano piece and in the art song. The book explores the potential of and the limits to integrating a metaphorical dimension into the process of analysis and reflects it methodologically. It opens up new analytical perspectives on and by means of metaphor.
