Barbara Maitra lived in India for 15 years 5 of them within an Indian extended family. There are many stories written about India and the Raj. She gives a unique view of the days after the departure of the British: a time of uncertainty for both nations, a testing time which brings out the best and worst in people. She observes it all with a discerning eye telling of love, ambition, lust and betrayal through her three main characters, Hugh, Julia and Eva. All three are human beings with frailties which ultimately decide their destinies. The river they came to is a tributary of the mighty Ganges which flows into the Bay of Bengal. It will bring you, the reader, along with it to this intriguing country.
