Die untersuchten und umfassend vorgelegten 21 ungestörten Sarkophagbestattungen stammen aus einer im 4. Jh. vollendeten und in den 1980er Jahren untersuchten Grabbasilika für über 1.000 Sarkophage, deren enorme Ausmaße und aufwendige Innendekoration einzigartig nördlich der Alpen sind. Die auf dem Areal geborgenen Grabinschriften weisen auf eine elitäre Bevölkerungsschicht christlichen Glaubens. Ein integrierter Grabbau gilt als mögliche Grablege des Trierer Bischofs Maximinus [um 330-347]. Die Arbeit untersucht Fundkontext und -umstände, taphonomische Prozesse, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die menschlichen Überreste und den Zustand der Textilfunde, die Bestattungsformen mit Sarkophag, Hobelspänen / Hobelspan, Gips und Myrte, Alter, Geschlecht, Krankheiten und Haartracht der Bestatteten, die Textilien aus Pflanzenfasern, Seide und Wolle einschließlich der Verwendung von Goldfäden / Goldfaden und Farbstoffen, die Präparation mit Harzen und Erdfarben wie Pistazien-, Zypressen- und Gummiharz, Verbindungen aus Ocker und Zucker / Wachse sowie Beigaben in Form von Nägeln / Nagel und Schuhen. Drei Anhänge erschließen Vergleichsfunde aus Europa, Nordafrika und dem Orient. The investigated and fully published 21 undisturbed burials in sarcophagi come from a funeral basilica completed in the 4th cent., excavated in the 1980s, and designed for more than 1,000 sarcophagi. Its enormous size and elaborate internal decoration are unique in the zone north of the Alps. The epitaphs found in the same area attest the presence of a Christian elite population. An integrated grave construction is considered the potential burial place of Bishop Maximinus of Treves [ca. 330-347]. This study analyses the find contexts and find circumstances, taphonomic processes, especially with regard to the human remains and the condition of textile finds, the different grave types with sarcophagi, planing chips, gypsum, and myrtle, the age, sex, diseases, and hairstyles of the deceased, the textiles made of plant fibres, silk, and wool including the use of gold threads and dyes, the preparation with resins and natural pigments such as pistachio resin, cypress resin, and gum resins, ochre, and sugar compounds/waxes as well as grave goods in the shape of nails and shoes. Three appendices present parallels from all over Europe, Northern Africa and the Near East.
