The ordinary is never far away from the mythic in these fourteen stories: a mother orients herself after learning that her son is to emigrate; a house is flooded by perilous moonlight; a girl dreams of angels and mermaids; the ghost of a mother aches yearningly over her children. Imbued with a profound love of nature and an unsettling sense of the ancient powers of ghosts, mermaids and witches, these stories -- multi-layered, memorably visible, and poetic -- seem to grow out of the landscape of the wild north-west of Ireland. These stories of love found and lost, of the leaving of childhood and the quest for fulfillment, they remind us, above all, of the unending, almost sacred, duty to guard the imagination. Marilyn McLaughlin won the Brian Moore Short Story Award in 1996; this is her first book.
