What artist hasn't fantasized about killing off one of his critics? "It was a gradual process," he writes, "like a stalagmite growing inside a cave." His victims, a diverse crew of oddball downtown Manhattan painters, each betray a fatal flaw Segretto exploits to create the "accidents" that kill them. An Art to Murder is an intricately-plotted, 88,000-word crime novel set mainly in lower Manhattan. It also careens to Paris, Austin and, after Segretto avoids execution, to the neo-Nazi haunts of northern Idaho, before returning to New York for its deadly denouement in the lofts and galleries of Chelsea's art district. Two strong, quirky female characters - Segretto's wife Edie, a beautiful sculptor, and his sometime lover, Sybil, a sociopathic, fortune-hunting Texas blonde - also play key roles. Another player is Segretto's relentless pursuer, NYPD Detective Vincent Fratello, a rough-edged Brooklyn-born cop who resents Segretto's sophisticated veneer and suspects him of murder but can't tie him to the crimes until much later. This debut novel will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers, from those who've devoured the Stieg Larsson trilogy, to those who crave the books of James Patterson, as well as general readers who enjoy a twisted tale well told. Its memoir style and unique primary setting in the art world of Soho and Chelsea also set it apart within the genre.
