Mary Junker guides us through Beckett's cultural heritage - including the Irish and French literary traditions, and the influences of James Joyce and Beckett's Protestant background in his work - before moving on to her main focus, an examination of five selected plays. A chapter each is devoted to Waiting for Godot, All That Fall, Krapp's Last Tape, Eh Joe and That Time. She concentrates in particular on the ways in which the Irish language and Hiberno-English have influenced Beckett. What is challenging and different about Mary Junker's study is that she gets to grips with some of the most difficult aspects of Beckett's drama, including the problem of the language in his plays. The result is a large volume of interesting, fresh possibilities expressed with cogency and scholarly firmness.
