Cook's great expeditions rank among the major voyages of discovery of all time, and the charts and coastal views of Captain Cook's voyages is a fascinating record of the work he accomplished. It is now completed with the publication of this final volume of the charts and coastal views drawn during Cook's last voyage, undertaken in part 'to find out a Northern Passage by Sea from the Pacific', and during which Cook 'discovered' the Hawaiian Islands and surveyed the north-west coast of America from Oregon to Alaska.The main part of the volume contains a full descriptive catalogue of all the charts and coastal views produced on board the Resolution and the Discovery -- over two hundred, all reproduced here, twenty of them in full colour. The editors also provide a synopsis of the voyage, an appraisal of Cook's surveying activities (including the two chrono-meters taken for sea trials), biographical sketches of the surveyors, draughtsmen and artists, and an account of the use of colour and the publication process; an inventory lists all items catalogued according to their present locations.
