With up to 17 million viewers The Gaffer was a popular 80s sitcom, featuring Fred Moffat, the gruff boss of a tiny engineering firm battling against bankruptcy. To stay in business he uses a sardonic wit and low cunning against his bitter foes - the Inland Revenue, the bank manager, the Trade Unions and the bureaucratic dicta of the factory inspector. In the final episode, despairing of the fight, he ups sticks and follows his family out to Australia. Now, The Gaffer's Guerrillas brings his story up to date. Following an acrimonious divorce and the failure of his new business out there, a flat-broke Moffat returns to England, hoping to start again. But it is a very different country from the England the Gaffer left years before. The nation is being hustled by cynical politicians into total European integration and a new Euro police force, nicknamed the Eustapo, is busy taking over a country renamed the 'Province of New Albion'. But the North Country will have none of it, and Britain is partitioned along the Mersea-Mablethorpe line. The new frontier passes through Moffat's home town of Grimchester - in fact, right through his old pub, the British Bugle, where a few regulars, including his old employee, start a pathetically inept resistance group. Despite his reluctance to get involved Moffat ends up running the group, but can he bring that old cunning to bear, and defeat the Euro usurpers once and for all?
