During school holidays, the Cook family travel to India, led by Kim their fearless Jack Russell Terrier. Places explored include: Hong Kong (on the way), Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Mandawa, Fatehpur, Sikar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur 'The Venice of the East'. After a thrilling visit to the the Taj Mahal, Charlie and Kim amuse the tourists by playing tricks in the gardens, which results in their being kidnapped by a travelling gypsy circus! They are taken away and forced to perform circus tricks at different locations, with the family in hot pursuit. En route, Charlie makes friends with one of the gypsies, Divya. It soon turns out that the circus is managed by cruel tyrants. Divya and Charlie plan how she can break away with some of the other circus performers. The final showdown occurs at the island of the Jag Mandir Hindu Temple on Lake Pichola. Can Kim save the day? In this adventure, Charlie learns more about himself when having to survive under harsh conditions on his own (well not really alone ... Kim is always by his side!) Also, Charlie learns how about to provide moral support to others in strife. The rest of the family learns, yet again, that patience, perseverance and the truth, eventually wins the day! This book is dedicated to the tens of millions of homeless people and families in India. So while this book is high adventure, it also has solid moral underpinnings; is an authentic travelogue (the places explored can be looked up on the web), and offers genuine insights into the local customs, food and culture.
