Opis

This study offers a comprehensive overview of landscape and land use in southeast Italy in the first millennium BC. Innovatively combining archaeobotanical and archaeozoological data with information from excavations, field surveys, and ancient written texts, the mutual relationship between people and landscapes is placed in a broad geographical and chronological framework. The author uses this multi-scalar approach to shed new light on a number of much-discussed research themes, including food habits, the scale and organization of agricultural production, the influx of Greek (ca. 8th-5th centuries BC) and Roman (ca. 3rd-2nd centuries BC) colonists, and globalization on local and regional land use. In addition, hotly debated issues such as the introduction of wine and olive oil production are tackled. The long-term perspective and multidisciplinary approach of this research add substantially to our understanding of these themes, and reveal that the relationship between people and their natural environment is much more complex than has hitherto been supposed. CATALOGUSTEKST CHICAGO: This book offers a comprehensive overview of landscape and land use in southeast Italy in the first millennium BCE.
