This carefully-crafted memoir caroms back and forth through a twelve-year period in the life of a young American woman in the Middle East and Europe. Stuck in a loveless marriage, unable to produce the child her husband demands, Susan nonetheless lives a blessed life on the island paradise of Cyprus. Until she doesn't. After dropping her husband at the airport in Nicosia, she finds herself in the middle of a violent coup d'etat, with tanks on the main thoroughfare firing on the presidential palace. Seeking shelter with a friend, she is fortunate to find help getting back through hostile checkpoints to her home in the northern town of Kyrenia, on the Turkish side, where friends gather and nervously discuss what comes next. What comes next are bombs, the first onslaught of the Turkish invasion. The expats decide to seek shelter in a UN camp between Nicosia and Kyrenia, not realizing that its location on the pass of the main road makes it hotly contested territory. They are stuck in the middle of it, bullets flying. Later, in Germany, Susan puts back together the pieces of her shattered life after the violent dissolution of her marriage. Creating batik paintings, she has successful exhibitions in Germany. Through travels and conversations with close friends, she weaves a narrative of extraordinary perception, insights, and lucid dreaming. It is a journey of awakening to her own ability to create her life as she wants it, not steered by the demands of others.
