Presented last summer at 'SNAP: Art at the Aldeburgh Festival' to coincide with the centenary of Benjamin Britten, Hambling's War Requiem stands as a bold testament to the anguish and absurdity of war. Hambling's paintings possess a candour and emotiveness that is at odds with much contemporary art, and these qualities reemerge in a recent cycle of sculptures titled Aftermath. The book will feature essays by James Cahill on War Requiem and Aftermath and their place within Hambling's wider oeuvre, drawing upon extensive interviews with the artist. These works have particular poignancy in 2014, as the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, yet Hambling's works also speak of conflicts everywhere from the most ancient to those in the here and now.
