The important feminist thinker and activist looks to the Obscene publications act of 1857 and shows how our views today of what is obcenity and what is permissable were influnenced by a law that was passed over one hundred years ago. She shows how writers such as Christina Rossetti and Walt Whitman were forced to devise coded ways of writing about love but also that the power of the written word can and has survived the lawmakers.
