Opis

This is a factual account of one woman's experiences while studying the plant medicine and living in the Amazon Jungle of Peru, South America. Halle McQueen was one of those people who had always wanted to do something adventurous but had always been too scared to do it. That all changed when her interest in plant medicine together with images of the ancient ruins of the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru inspired her to take the leap out of her comfort zone and go to South America. Her adventure began as a tourist in 2006 when she travelled to Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil. During her trip to Bolivia in 2006, McQueen visited the renowned medicine men; the Kallawayas and took part in a healing ceremony. This was her first of many experiences where she was exposed to the power of plant medicine ceremony. Little did she know the Amazon jungle would entice her to return to Peru for 3-6 months every year for eight years to study the plant medicine and build a small business? After one year at home she was drawn back to Peru to begin her adventure in the Amazon Jungle. Fate led her to a traditional shaman in the remote Manu jungle. He welcomed her into his trust and gave her the opportunity to experience an Ayahuasca ceremony including the collection and preparation of the medicinal plants. McQueen was blissfully happy for the first few years in the jungle where she lived with her protector, a beautiful yellow dog and later a cat and a bird. She made plant medicine for the locals who embraced her presence and helped her to grow food. The jungle children became her educators in the plant medicine and all things relevant to living in the jungle. However, her naivety and lack of knowledge about local cultures exposed her to many experiences which were illuminating but sometimes, dangerous and very ugly. Her plant medicine knowledge was also challenged when she became very ill with only the jungle folk to help her. She put her faith in a local educated man who was grateful for a once in a lifetime opportunity. He offered to supervise the construction of a small jungle lodge with the aim of managing it and caring for her small house on the river in her absence. Years later it all turned nasty when she realised the people who she entrusted with her money were not as genuine as she had thought. Over the years she was systematically robbed and deceived by her town friends. When she had nothing left to give, her personal safety became a major concern which culminated in a home invasion and rape. McQueen made the decision to leave Peru for good however, she now had a dog and a cat to consider. She knew from experience that the people had no consideration for the welfare of animals that generally died from neglect. She was left with only one solution - to try to take them home to Australia. However, fate stepped in once more and served a devastating blow to her plans. Her final experience before leaving Peru for the last time was another Ayahuasca ceremony with shamans in the Andean mountains. Here she found answers to many unanswered questions. McQueen returned home with a new perspective on her life with no regrets, knowing that if she had not pushed herself to her limits she would never have known how strong she was. Halle McQueen has a BA in Health Science (Complimentary Medicine) from Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, and an Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine from Athene College in Western Australia. She is the mother of three and grandmother of seven.
