Originally published as Louis XIV et le Siam, this English version has been ably translated by Michael Smithies, author of numerous books and articles on the French involvement in Siam during the 17th century. Dirk Van der Cruysse, of the Royal Academy of Belgium, is professor of French culture and language at the University of Antwerp.
