Excerpt from Speech of Hon. James Buchanan, of Pennsylvania, in Support of the Veto Power, and in Reply to Mr. Clay, of Kentucky: Delivered in the United States Senate, Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1842 This appeal to the people, sir,'was' a vain one. The avowal of their principles destroyed them. The people did not come to the rescue. Never was there a more disastrous defeat than theirs, at the lam tall elections, so immediately after their triumphant victory. Thank Heaven! The people have not. Thus far responded to this appeal,. And I trust they may never consent to abolish. The veto power. Sir, the Democratic party in regard to this power, in the language of the'doughty Baron's of England, centuries ago, are not willing that the charter of their liberties shall be changed. We shall hold on to this veto power as one or the most effectual safeguards of the Union, and one of the surest means of carrying into effect the will of the people.
