This is a true story. Werner went astray because of his brother, Jochen, who was eleven years older. At age 15, Werner served a juvenile sentence in a detention center for car theft. While still on probation, he was arrested again. Jochen got him a new identity. This was followed by more car thefts, burglaries, and a murder all crimes Jochen ordered Werner to commit. Werner struggled deeply with his conscience, but his older brother seemed to have none. Two more murders followed. After a failed attempt to smuggle weapons, he was convicted in England and deported. It dawned on him: Because of these crimes, he was trapped in a hopeless dependence on his brother, bound by unconditional obedience and subservience. His dream of becoming a surgeon seemed over.
