Entropy's Ledger

Vaelen was thirty-one years old when he climbed into the upload cradle to escape a dying Earth. Four thousand years later, his mind is full. Every commute, every waiter's face, every argument on every dock has been preserved with the merciless fidelity of silicon, and there is no longer room for a single new thought. To keep thinking, he must begin to forget.Entropy's Ledger follows one consciousness across a billion years of deep time as it pays, bit by bit, the price that physics demands for staying awake. Each act of erasure releases its small tithe of heat into the dark, and none of it can be taken back. Centuries are compressed into approximations. The index that held his life in order rots under cosmic radiation until a childhood thunderstorm and a dying star occupy the same moment. Lived experience hardens into hieroglyphs, then into tokens, then into a single stubborn fragment that the machine refuses to surrender. Meanwhile the galaxy around him burns down from stellar nurseries to red embers to a cold, black floor, and the vessel that carries him shrinks from an orbital ring to a drifting spar to a twelve-millimeter wafer of stone.Threaded between the chapters are the crystalline plates, the logs Vaelen etched into quartz in his first years after upload, written in the voice of the young engineer he once was, a man who still remembered the smell of rain and a woman named Elena laughing in a storm. As the novel descends through the epochs, those plates become the only witness to who he was, and the question at the heart of the book sharpens into something quietly devastating: when everything else has been spent, what is the last thing a mind will refuse to let go?Rigorous in its science and aching in its humanity, Entropy's Ledger is hard science fiction in the tradition of Stapledon and Greg Egan, a meditation on memory, mortality, and the thermodynamics of the self. It is a story about the cost of remembering and the cost of forgetting, and about the one moment of being alive that might outlast the stars.
