At a time when the global economy is witnessing significant shifts in economic power centers, and a growing focus on sustainable development, the environment, supply chain efficiency, advanced technology, and rare minerals, this book highlights the importance of the knowledge economy as a strategic approach to achieving economic diversification and sustainable development. This approach relies on non-traditional elements in generating national GDP, such as information, technology, research and development, and innovation. The book presents a model for measuring and evaluating knowledge economy experiences by explaining and analyzing the UAE's experience as a pioneering model in the Gulf, the Arab world, and the region, and one that ranks highly globally. The book comprises four chapters. The first chapter discusses the theoretical framework of the knowledge economy, explaining its meaning, definition, concept, characteristics, features, and requirements. It also presents the legislative and regulatory framework for building a knowledge economy. Chapter Two examines models of knowledge economy applications in the UAE that have been adopted at both the federal and local levels, particularly in the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which are leading the transformation towards a knowledge economy. It also clarifies the institutional entities and strategies involved in knowledge applications and presents the contributions of knowledge economy activities, especially those related to education and information and communication technology, to the GDP. This reinforces the drive to diversify the economic base away from traditional energy sources such as oil and gas and to achieve sustainable development. Chapter Three analyzes the UAE's advanced ranking at the Gulf, Arab, regional, and global levels within the Global Knowledge Index, as well as the reasons that have enabled the UAE to maintain this leading position. Chapter Four utilizes the SWOT analysis matrix as a model for measuring strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It reviews strengths and how to enhance them, weaknesses and how to mitigate them, and how to seize opportunities and address threats. The book concludes with a variety of findings and specific recommendations, identifying the entities that can implement them and the timeframe required for each recommendation. These recommendations are of interest to researchers and decision-makers, helping them to continue the shift towards a knowledge economy as a strategic path to achieving economic diversification and sustainable development.
