Locked Behind an Open Door is, in essence, a love story about a parent's love for their child. When the connection to them is severed, be it by estrangement, death, or other extenuating circumstances, the blow is devastating. This is Michale's personal story. It is about the three-year search for her 20-year-old son, Jeff, who had become addicted to drugs and seemingly vanished from the earth. The juxtaposition of his missing status and her debilitating panic attacks with agoraphobic features (fear of leaving home), propelled Michale into a battle with her personal demons, which had plagued her since the age of 25. How would she make the 18-hour drive from Northern Oregon to Southern California, where Jeff was last seen, when she couldn't drive further than a ten-mile radius from her home?
