Mr. Britling Sees It Through - H. G. Wells - Mr. Britling Sees It Through is a wartime novel by English writer, H. G. Wells, first published in 1916. One of the most popular novels in the UK and Australia during World War I, it tells the story of Mr Britling, his complex character and relationships with his wife, his affairs, his son who goes off to fight in the War, and a German friend, who is forced to leave the country at the start of the War. The book includes an exposition of the author's non-sectarian religious faith ('Religion is the first thing and the last thing, and until a man has found God and been found by God, he begins at no beginning, he works to no end. He may have his friendships, his partial loyalties, his scraps of honour. But all these things fall into place and life falls into place only with God. Only with God. God, who fights through men against Blind Force and Night and Non-Existence; who is the end, who is the meaning.') The Russian writer Maxim Gorkey called the book: 'the finest, most courageous, truthful, and humane book written in Europe in the course of this accursed war . . at a time of universal barbarism and cruelty, your book is an important and truly humane work.'Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is sometimes called the "e;father of science fiction. During his own lifetime, however, he was most prominent as a forward-looking, even prophetic social critic who devoted his literary talents to the development of a progressive vision on a global scale. A futurist, he wrote a number of utopian works and foresaw the advent of aircraft, tanks, space travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television and something resembling the World Wide Web. His science fiction imagined time travel, alien invasion, invisibility, and biological engineering. Brian Aldiss referred to Wells as the "e;Shakespeare of science fiction"e;, while American writer Charles Fort referred to him as a "e;wild talent"e;. Wells rendered his works convincing by instilling commonplace detail alongside a single extraordinary assumption per work dubbed "e;Wells's law"e; leading Joseph Conrad to hail him in 1898 as "e;O Realist of the Fantastic!"e;. His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine (1895), which was his first novel, The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898) and the military science fiction The War in the Air (1907). Wells was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times.
