Our Portion Sizes Could Feed Entire Villages

Bellweather is preparing a Harvest Festival built around a lavish dinner on Main Street. The woman writing the town's speeches knows how to make abundance sound like something everyone shares. Then she sees her father put peaches back at the grocery store, and a letter arrives from a food pantry in Rill asking whether it can receive the festival's leftovers. She borrows a scale and starts counting what Bellweather throws away. What begins as a question about one dinner draws her into restaurant kitchens, grocery storerooms, council meetings, and the pantry twenty miles down the road. The food is there, but getting it to people who can use it takes more than a promise. Cooks have rules to follow. Drivers need workable routes. Volunteers need time, storage space, and the freedom to refuse a delivery they cannot safely serve. As the narrator pushes for change, she must learn when to speak for her neighbors and when to listen to them. Our portion sizes could feed entire villages is a contemporary novel about food waste, hunger, family, and the unglamorous work of caring for a community. It asks what abundance means when a town has more than it can eat, yet some of its neighbors still have too little.
