This book examines the nature of the challenges and limitations of development in civil-military relations in Pakistan, and their impact on the country's democratic transition during the period from 1999 to 2020. During this time, Pakistan witnessed several significant developments in rebuilding relations between the military and civilian forces, aiming to achieve a balance between the demands of effective political governance and Pakistani security, thus advancing the democratic transition. The book is divided into four chapters, preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. These chapters address the theoretical foundations of civil-military relations and democratic transition, including analytical and conceptual frameworks, as well as the nature of civil-military relations during the military rule of Pervez Musharraf (1999-2008). The book also explores the nature of civil-military relations during this period. It also addresses the nature of those relations during the civilian rule phase in Pakistan from 2008 to 2020, clarifying the mechanisms for reformulating civil-military relations and the repercussions of the recent elections, whether the 2013 or 2018 elections, on the course of the democratic transition process in Pakistan in its aftermath. Finally, the book also addresses the challenges of the democratic transition process in Pakistan in light of the problems of civil-military relations in its internal and external aspects.
